Trauma(Head Injury)

Brain and spine traumas can be extremely distressing, varying in severity and recovery time. Early diagnosis is crucial to minimize complications and accelerate the healing process. She offers top-notch spine and brain treatments in Hyderabad. Some patients may experience long-term effects, such as cognitive impairments, motor difficulties, or behavioral changes, requiring ongoing support and care.

Types of Traumatic Head Injuries

Epidural Hematoma

An epidural hematoma occurs when blood collects between the skull and the outer layer of the brain (dura). It can cause rapid pressure on the brain, requiring immediate medical attention to prevent serious complications.

Subdural Hemtaoma

A subdural hematoma involves blood pooling between the brain and its covering (dura). It often develops from head injuries and can lead to brain damage if not treated promptly. Severity ranges from mild to life-threatening.

Cerebral Contusions

Cerebral contusions are bruises on the brain tissue caused by head trauma. They can result in swelling, bleeding, and damage to brain cells, affecting cognitive and motor functions depending on the severity.

Concussion Injury

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury caused by a blow or jolt to the head. Symptoms can include headaches, dizziness, and confusion, with recovery typically taking a few days to weeks, though rest is crucial.

Skull Fracture   Breakage of the bones of the skull, which may or may not be associated with damage to the brain tissue. Symptoms can include pain, swelling, and visible deformity at the site of injury.

Intracranial Hemorrhage Bleeding inside the skull, which can be classified into different types such as epidural hematoma, subdural hematoma, or intracerebral hemorrhage. These can lead to increased pressure on the brain and require urgent medical intervention.

Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI)  Widespread damage to the brain’s white matter caused by rapid acceleration or deceleration forces, commonly seen in severe head trauma. It can result in widespread brain dysfunction.

Symptoms of Traumatic Head Injuries

Altered Sensorium
Altered sensorium refers to a state of confusion, disorientation, or diminished awareness of the environment. It can result from various conditions, such as brain injury, infections, or metabolic disturbances, requiring prompt evaluation to determine the cause.

Coma A coma is a prolonged state of unconsciousness where a person is unresponsive to stimuli. It often results from severe brain injury, stroke, or other critical conditions, and requires intensive medical care to monitor and manage the underlying cause.

Physical Symptoms  Headache, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, blurred vision, sensitivity to light or noise.

Cognitive Symptoms  Memory problems, difficulty concentrating, confusion, slowed thinking.

Behavioral Changes Irritability, mood swings, anxiety, depression.

Physical Signs Bruising or swelling of the scalp, loss of consciousness (in severe cases), abnormal pupil size or reaction.

Treatments

Surgical Fixation of Skull Fractures  Surgical fixation of skull fractures involves repairing broken bones in the skull to prevent further brain damage. This procedure stabilizes the fracture, restores the skull’s structure, and protects the brain from injury or infection.

Emergency Surgical Evacution of Blood Clots Emergency surgical evacuation of blood clots is performed to remove blood buildup in or around the brain caused by trauma or stroke. This procedure relieves pressure on the brain and prevents further damage, often critical for saving a patient’s life.

Decompressive Hemicraniectomy A decompressive hemicraniectomy is a life-saving procedure where part of the skull is temporarily removed to relieve pressure on the brain caused by swelling. It helps prevent brain damage in cases of severe trauma, stroke, or brain hemorrhage.
